Power of a family support group
Family support groups are for relatives and friends dealing with a loved one who has a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, OCD, post-traumatic stress or borderline personality disorder. Even if your loved one is without a diagnosis, group meetings can be a helpful way to learn from other caregivers on a similar journey.
Looking for people who understand?
By sharing our ups and downs, we explore how to cope more effectively with the challenges of our loved one’s condition … in a setting where we know we won’t be judged. Everyone around the table understands what we’re going through. And the meetings are confidential. What’s said in the group, stays in the group.
The peer-led Cornwall & District Family Support Group meets monthly in both Cornwall and Alexandria (Ontario). If you’d like to try a meeting, call us or visit our website.
There are also many other excellent support group options in the region. For more details, see Local Resources to explore “Caregiver support & education.”
